Your data stays yours
Ration has no account, no database and no tracker. Here is exactly what stays on your device, and what leaves it when you use an online feature.
On your device
No account needed: everything is stored on your phone. Ration’s relay only passes along encrypted changes it can’t read, and keeps nothing.
Encrypted backups
One file holds everything, encrypted on your device (AES-256) if you add a passphrase.
Synced with your own Google Drive, if you want
A hidden folder in your own Drive keeps your devices in sync, and the encrypted relay makes each change arrive in under a second. Only Ration, on your devices, can read them.
Ration’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Ration only asks for access to its own hidden folder in your Drive (drive.appdata), never to your other files.
Everything about your privacy
100% private
Ration has no account, no database and no tracker. Your meals, workouts, weight and notes are stored only on your device. Nothing is ever sent to the Ration team, so we could not read your data even if we wanted to.

The encrypted relay
To make a change reach your other devices in under a second, Ration passes it through a small relay (Cloudflare). It is encrypted on your device (AES-256) with a key that never leaves your devices: the relay sees only unreadable messages and keeps none of them. Google Drive remains your copy; without the relay, everything works as before.
Friends, shared lists, live location
What you choose to show a friend, a shared list or your live location during an outing is encrypted on your device before it reaches the relay: only the friend (or whoever has the link) can read it. You choose, friend by friend, what they see; your cycle, notes, Workspace and lab results are never shared. A live location only keeps “finished” once your outing ends, and anything not updated for 120 days is deleted.
Weather, maps, voice
The weather of an outing is requested from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) through the relay, with your location rounded to about 1 km. Offline maps ask OpenStreetMap’s Overpass service for an area, never your track. Voice commands and dictated notes use your phone’s own speech recognition, which may go through Apple’s or Google’s servers; Ration keeps no sound except the voice notes you record, stored on your device.
Notifications
If you turn them on, your phone gets an address from its own notification service (Apple, Google or Mozilla), which Ration’s relay keeps with your phone’s language and the types you chose. A notification only says what kind it is (a kudos, a reminder…): it is encrypted for your phone, which writes the text. For reminders, the relay only knows the time and the type, never which supplement or what the meal contains. Turning them off removes the address.
The leaderboard and Ration AntiCheat
Joining is optional. The relay then keeps your username, your look, your club, your ranked XP and your likes, and for each session, outing, day of meals or weigh-in: its type, date, duration, distance and number of sets, so it can check that the XP is plausible. Never a meal, a weight, a photo or your cycle. To slow down accounts created in series, it keeps a one-day fingerprint of the connection, never the IP address. Leaving the leaderboard erases all of it.
Clubs, programs, the coach link, the planned return
A club’s wall and outings, a program sent by link and the link for your coach are encrypted on your device with a key that is in the link (or that only members have): the relay can’t read them. The coach link expires on the date you choose, and you can remove it at any time. For a planned return, your phone seals an alert for your friends that the relay can’t read and only hands over if you don’t confirm your return in time; it is erased as soon as you confirm.
RationFood AI and RationSport AI online
Only when you analyse a meal or a photo, search for a food or ask a question. The text (or the scaled-down photo) goes through Ration’s relay to a free AI service (Groq, Mistral or Cloudflare), without your name, account or log (for portions that fit you, only your calorie target, rounded); photos are never kept, and a food search already made by someone is answered from the relay’s shared cache. These free services may use the text to improve their models: don’t write anything personal. Offline, everything happens on your device.
The leaderboard and the short link (since 0.86.5)
If you join the leaderboard, the relay also keeps your account XP, your badges and, if you want, your profile photo, shown to other players; everything is erased when you leave. When you share your profile, the short link keeps that profile on the relay, under a key only your account knows, until you remove it.
Clubs, your showcase and reactions (since 0.86.6)
In the leaderboard, the relay also keeps your day streak and your full look (the pieces of your outfit, your hairstyle, your skin tone: identifiers, never a photo of you), and the reactions players leave on your profile (who reacted, and which one). For a club: its emblem, motto, city, sport, language and entry rules. Everything about you is erased when you leave the leaderboard.
